But for a brief period, the Holuhraun volcano erupts into a fiery mass of hot lava the size Manhattan, splitting the ground. But those wishing to see the inside the volcano will have to act soon because scientists and the Icelandic Met Office expect the volcano to cease eruption in March of 2015.
In contrast, temporary ice caves form along the edge of glaciers every winter, which can be accessed with assistance from professional local guides, according to Guide to Iceland. This year, the Vatnajökull glacier offers the best caves for visiting.
