My wife was asking me about my just-concluded social media break. I’d stepped away from Twitter, Instagram, Vine and Facebook, essentially all of my social media feeds for more than a week. The timing was letter-perfect as it coincided with a much needed holiday break, which started before Christmas and ended just hours ago, a few days after the New Year.
I didn’t learn that social media is inherently evil or good. It’s just something to be used in moderation. Perhaps I lost sight of that and did start to overuse it a bit. I don’t have to obsessively check it or share something new every ten minutes. When I’m at home I can use it less and listen more. That effort certainly made a difference during this social media break.
I’m happy to be back on Twitter, but have yet to check my other accounts. I know I will, but I have no burning desire to do so. For now, I’m happy to check my Twitter account once an hour (far less than usual) and visit Instagram and Vine when I have something new to share.
How long this new moderation approach will last is not clear. CES 2015 starts soon, which means I have no choice but to ramp up my social media posts considerably. I just hope that, going forward, I can still use it wisely. Read more…
