With the flood of Windows 10 news from Microsoft, including the announcement of a futuristic virtual-reality headset, you may have overlooked some of this week’s best apps. Luckily, each weekend, we round up our favorite new and updated apps, so you won’t miss out. This week’s list includes Spotify’s newest updates, the BBC’s redesign and an app to help you invest like a billionaire.
The BBC News app rolled out a major redesign in the UK this week (a similar update is coming soon to the U.S). Its entire interface has been completely retooled to surface a wider variety of stories, and ensure a more personalized experience. BBC’s update also adds two new sections for the most-read and most-watched articles. The free app is available for iiOS and Android.
Spotify updated its iOS app with a new “touch preview” feature that allows you to listen to song previews by long-pressing on any artist, song, playlist or album. In addition, the streaming service says the feature will eventually be available to Android and Windows Phone users.
iBillionaire’s goal is to help you become smarter with investments by teaching strategies used by billionaires (and their hedge-fund managers). The app tracks an index of investments made by some of the world’s top moguls, and enables you to compare how their portfolios stack up to, say, Warren Buffet. The idea behind iBillionaire is that taking tips from the best will help you get there a little faster. The free app is available for iOS and Android.
Crossy Road is back this week with 16 new characters who try not to become roadkill. The game, which is part Frogger and part endless runner, hits the mobile game sweet spot of retro graphics, cute animations and addictive gameplay. Each of the 16 new characters — our favorite so far is “Unlucky Cat” — must be unlocked one by one, adding a new layer to the gameplay (previously there was only one character). The free game is available for iOS and Android.
